As physically active human beings, there is no doubt that a clean environment is beneficial for our own personal health. Even with the best race practices there are consequences of running events such as energy use, transportation, and those terrific post-race goodies.
Please join us. Do one green thing, and together we can make a difference!
Here's how to reduce your carbon footprint:
- Carpool with family and friends, ride your bike or use public transit to the race.
- Recycle at the Sneak: After you've crossed the finish line to the post-race party, look for recycle bins to deposit water cups and beverage bottles.
- Bring your personal water bottle for refills from Denver Water Trailer.
- Register online.
- Donate your used running shoes at the One World Running's shoe bins located at the post-race blockparty. This international program promotes health, fitness and nutrition awareness by providing running shoes to those in need. Since 1986, a group of runners in Boulder, Colorado, has collected, washed and sent to those in need, new and "near-new" athletic shoes, t-shirts and shorts, along with medicine, school and art supplies.
This year, we took the following steps to make the race a greener, healthier event for our community and our planet.
FSC-certified, Recycled Paper
When choosing paper for our promotional materials, we opted for stock with post-consumer recycled content that is also FSC-certified. Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organization established to promote the responsible management of the world's forests. Products carrying the FSC label are independently certified to assure consumers that they come from forests that are managed to meet the social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations.
Race Day
In addition to over 20,000 people at the event site this year, there will be recyclable water cups, plastic beverage bottles, and lots and lots of paper trash out there.
- With Waste Management's Single Stream recycling process we'll divert all of that trash to our recycling receptacles to be picked up and disposed of responsibly.
- Sports Authority is again providing reusable shopping bags for finisher race bags
- All race electricity needs are powered by Biodiesel and Solar-powered generators.
- We encourage all of our vendors, race crew and volunteers to carpool to the event to reduce green house gas emissions.
